Due to growth deformities the knee-cap (patella) can dislocate, causing lameness.
To diagnose and plan the best treatment, we use x-rays.
Treatment is based on the specific cause of the dislocation. Most commonly, the attachment point of the patella ligament is moved to the optimal position on the shin bone (transposition) and held securely with pins and wire.
Your pet will require at least six weeks of confinement to a pen or crate after surgery while the bone heals, combined with controlled lead-only walks and physiotherapy.
Most pets achieve complete resolution of lameness and unrestricted exercise within a few months of surgery without pain relief. Arthritis can progress in the long term and the joint can be at risk of developing cruciate disease.
