Info

Cause
In some young dogs, the bones that form the elbow don’t fit together perfectly. This can cause an increase in loading to one or more parts of the joint leading to cartilage erosion and bone fragmentation.

Diagnosis
To diagnose and plan the best treatment, we use a CT or PET-CT scan of the elbows and sometimes the shoulders.

Treatment
Cartilage lesions (OCD) are removed and a cut is commonly made to the ulnar bone (proximal ulnar osteotomy). This cut removes the pressure point in the joint, to resolve the excessive cartilage loading.

After-care
Your pet will require at least six weeks of careful confinement to prevent running, jumping and playing after surgery while the bone heals, combined with controlled lead-only walks and physiotherapy.

Outcome
Your pet will normally limp for a couple of months while the bone heals. Many pets then achieve improvement or resolution of lameness. Because arthritis can progress after surgery some pets require long term pain relief and physiotherapy.
