Info

What is it?

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome causes breathing difficulties in pugs, french bulldogs, english bulldogs and other short faced breeds. BOAS dogs have narrow nostrils and long, thick soft palates that suck into the opening of the windpipe when they breathe in.

Over time, the hard work of breathing through this narrow space can cause airway collapse. Breathing becomes even more difficult, and dogs are risking dangerous airway blockage.

Treatment

BOAS usually gets slowly worse over the dog’s life, so earlier treatment is recommended. It can be corrected with surgery to make a lot more room for airflow, and allow dogs to breathe much more comfortably.

BOAS surgery can be performed at any age. When the problem is identified earlier in life, the corrective surgery is more straightforward, and so we recommend assessment for BOAS in all brachycephalic breeds around 1 year of age.

Outcome

The overall prognosis for significant improvement in breathing is excellent. Treatment of dogs allows them to live a much more comfortable, active and full life.
