Info

Cause
In some small breed dogs, the ulna bone in the front leg can stop growing prematurely. This can cause elbow pain and rotation of the foot.

Diagnosis
To diagnose and plan the best treatment, we use x-rays.

Treatment
The safest treatment involves cutting the ulna bone (distal ulnar osteotomy) to allow this bone to lengthen. Occasionally some patients need additional treatments including correcting a deformity in the radius bone.

After-care
Your pet will require controlled lead-only walks and physiotherapy for at least six weeks after treatment.

Outcome
Most pets achieve complete resolution of lameness and unrestricted exercise within a few months of surgery without pain relief. Arthritis can progress in the long term.

Special Touches

While your pet is in our expert care, the clinically-proven Adaptil calming pheromone collar is used to reduce stress.

Our experienced surgical team performs each surgery precisely, calmly and quietly.

After surgery, your pet wakes up in a dedicated  temperature-controlled warming room.

During anaesthesia recovery, our lovely surgical nurse sits with your pet so they are not alone.

After surgery, a photo of your pet is texted to you  so you can see all is well.

Typically used by athletes after injury, Game Ready® is a healing system we use to reduce swelling and promote post-operative recovery.

To lessen anxiety for your pet, we only use fabric enclosures (not metal cages).

All our patients go home with multimodal pain relief on the same day of surgery. This avoids separation anxiety and expensive after-hours care.

Four physio sessions are included in each orthopaedic package to restore mobility quickly.
